Delhi Public School Budgam Commemorates Shair-e-Kashmir, Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Mehjoor.

Delhi Public School Budgam organised a Memorial lecture to commemorate the National Poet of Jammu and Kashmir, Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Mahjoor on Sept 27, 2017. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Aejaz Mohammad Sheikh, HOD Linguistics, University of Kashmir. While Mr. Abdaal Mehjoor, Mehjoor’s grandson, writer, journalist, broadcaster was the presiding guest. The school has been organising such lectures related to the literature, culture and history of Kashmir for long to enable the young generation analyse the rich legacy and develop their personalities without getting detached from their roots thereby providing them a broader spectrum for analysis.

The Chief guest, Prof. Aeijaz said, “The illustrious son of Kashmir, Mahjoor stands out as a poet par excellence for this immense contribution in every field of Kashmiri life. His utmost effort was not only to raise the imagination of his people but cherish their dream of peaceful life full of love, compassion and humanity. He further added that Mahjoor was the champion of cultural awakening in Kashmir and played a very prominent role in bringing about the changes in the political mind set of the people. In the second phase of his literary career, through his poems, he aroused the poor and downtrodden out of their centuries old slumber and inspired them to fight for their rights.

He quoted the famous poem.

WALO HO BAGWANO – Pen downed by Mahjoor and spoke at length about its significance.

The presiding guest Mr. Abdaal Mehjoor appreciated the initiative of the school and stressed the moral development of the students. He said that the present generation has a lot to learn from the great personalities like Mahjoor. Abdaal Mehjoor said that Mahjoor was the symbol of 5000 years old tradition, cultural, civilization and language of Kashmir. He quoted several poems of Mahjoor as well. He further added that Mahjoor was a great romanticist. Mysticism in romanticism is fully visible in his poetry. He was a true lover of nature. He appreciated Prof. Saif-ud-din Soz’s efforts in releasing the postage stamp in the name of Mahjoor and making it live from SKICC for every Kashmiri. Writing in Kashmiri during those days was considered to be lewd but it was Mahjoor who published published a newspaper in Kashmiri namely “Gaash” in the year 1940.

On this occasion the students of DPS Budgam presented Kalam-e-Mahjoor.

It was appreciated a lot as everyone was realising the simple but effective and provocative approach of Mahjoor. Pictures depicting the release of postage stamp in commemoration of Mahjoor were also shown on this occasion. Later on, the students had an interactive session with the Chief guest where in different questions regarding Mahjoor’s life and poetry were asked.

The Pro VC Madam Mumtaz-un-nisa Soz graced the occasion with her benign presence. She was deeply touched when the students presented Sahibo Sath Chum…………”
