Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year. The day aims to raise awareness among masses about climate change and global warming. The day inspires to act towards the protection of the environment and focus on the need for conservation. Earth Day is recognised as the largest civic event in the world. Earth Day demands immediate action to be taken to tackle industrial pollution, oil spills, toxic waste disposal and others.
Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day continues to grow as a worldwide phenomenon focused on promoting clean living and a healthy, sustainable habitat for people and wildlife alike. Celebrating Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our planet is and how important it is to protect it.
Earth Day was celebrated at DPS Budgam via virtual means to promote environmental awareness and to remind the students that they can protect the earth in their everyday lives as well. On this occasion a special assembly was conducted by the students of class 7th with the theme focussing on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. Students delivered speeches and displayed presentations based on climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade that can increase contact and the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans (zoonotic diseases) like COVID-19. The need of sustainable development was explained by the students through the medium of posters and songs.
The teachers laid stress on the fact that Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, as well as a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season, have affected millions of people. Now facing COVID-19, a worldwide health pandemic links to the health of the ecosystem. The event concluded on a note: Let’s promote harmony with the nature and the Earth and join the global movement to restore our world!
