Delhi Public School Budgam Conducts a Memorial Lecture on Mahjoor. A Memorial Lecture was organised by DPS Budgam to commemorate the Shair- e-Kashmir -Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Mahjoor .The event was organised to make the students familiar with the poet of Kashmir and make them aware of their rich heritage and culture. The Lecture was presented by the famous poet and scholar, Mr. Abdal Mahjoor, the grand son of Peerzada Ghulam Ahmad Mahjoor. The event was presided over by the eminent educationist, Prof. Neerja Mattoo ji while the Pro VC DPS Budgam, Mrs. Mumtazunnisa Soz further graced the occasion with her benign presence. A documentary highlighting the life of Mahjoor and a special musical programme based on Mahjoor’s poetry presented by the Dept. of Music, DPS Budgam were among the chief attractions. Mr Abdal Mahjoor in his lecture highlighted that Mahjoor introduced a new style into Kashmiri poetry and expanded it into previously unexplored thematic realms. He is the most known and sung poet of Kashmir. Mahjoor‟s poetry was sung and read in every household because his songs and his poems were the cherished property of every man, woman and child, living between Baramulla and Pir Panchal. Mr Abdal Mahjoor stressed that undoubtedly like Wordsworth, Mahjoor’s ghazals and nazms soothed, healed and inspired miserable Kashmiris especially those belonging to the lower rung in society like meagrely paid labourers and hardworking farmers. Prof. Neerja Mattoo ji expressed her delight to see the school taking such keen efforts to link the present generation to their past that seems lost. She explained to the students that Mahjoor, the man of sensitive tendencies brought forth his higher concepts and sent valuable messages of love, patriotism, mutual respect, values and purpose of life to the world especially to the people of his land inspiring them to shed the yoke of bondage both political and economic at once to live a better life full of dignity. He gave a message of Hindu- Muslim brotherhood through the values he inculcated in his poetry. The Principal, Ms. Shobhna Sirohi while presenting the vote of thanks stressed the need of safeguarding the rich culture and tradition of the land. She further stressed the need of realising the lessons of introspection and living with dignity that the great poet has taught us. She explained the value of mother tongue and brotherhood to the students.
