Drug addiction is a disease that should be treated like any other condition medically, psychologically and emotionally. Usage of illegal drugs among youth is a huge challenge and the situation is more alarming than it looks on the surface. It is imperative to stop the menace or else the entire fabric of the society will be lost for ever.
This was mentioned by Ms. Syed Sabreen, psychologist Budgam Medical College, while addressing the students of Classes 10, 11 and 12 at a programme organized to make the grown up students of DPS Budgam aware of the prevailing drug menace in Kashmir in general and in Budgam in particular. The concept of legal and illegal drugs was also explained by her. She added that some sort of drugs that contain intoxicating substances are considered legal if prescribed by a medical practitioner. However there are reports that such drugs are also misused by addicts.
Ms. Sabreen apprised the gathering of the risk involved in experimental trials of such drugs and the aftermath of it. She narrated her experience with her patients who repent a lot after falling into the trap. She further added that such drugs might give pleasure at the beginning but the amount of pain it gives slowly cannot be expressed in words. A large number of people die because of the overdose too because the body of the patient gets used to the drugs. In this way the requirement keeps on increasing.
The present-day youth is looking for shortcuts in every field. They want to escape from the real world without realizing the risk of intoxication and drug abuse. Moreover, the government has established deaddiction centers in every district of every state to counter the issue.
Students also asked question and wanted to know how they could help the authorities in fighting the menace.
